Laboratories

Since 1990, the research group, linked to this laboratory, has been conducting research in the areas of energy and the environment since 1990. The highlight in the field of energy in the 1990s was the area dedicated to the study of the oil industry with repercussions on policy information and academic production (a book and several publications) at the time of the Study on the Competitiveness of Brazilian Industry (IE-Unicamp/IEI-UFRJ), and the assessment of the Petrobras Deep Waters Programme, featuring international articles, reports and seminars. The work in the 2000s was focused on the area of assessment of S&T, with around a dozen articles published and assessments conducted for Finep, IPEA and CGGE. With regard to environmental issues, the group contributed in the form of the project named Environmental and Social-Economic Impacts of the Implementation of the Planalto Petrochemical Complex, supplying subsidies to public audiences and elements for the resizing of investments. New projects have brought the two areas closer together, with studies on energy transition and sustainability.

The LABESCT Social Studies Group of Science and Technology, created in 1995, is composed of a multidisciplinary team geared to the understanding of the relations between scientific facts, technological artifacts, public polices and social, historical, material and cultural contexts where this knowledge is developed and put into operation. The aim of the research conducted is the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the different means of production and use of scientific and technological knowledge, and the forms of validation, disclosure and cooperation in relation to the same. It is hoped the studies conducted produce knowledge that is useful for political intervention in the regulation of science and technology. The group has an excellent reputation among the Brazilian and international communities in the area, reflected in the financing received and the significant amount of scientific production. The group has produced dozens of Master´s and PhD graduates.

The UNICAMP Innovation Policies Analysis Group (GAPI) has been working on the study of Science, Technology and Society relations, belonging to LABTS, based on the use of approaches such as the history and sociology of science and technology, the economics of technology, public authorities and political analysis. The multidisciplinary and multi-institutional GAPI team has been working with domestic and foreign institutions and in partnership with other groups similar to UNICAMP. The activities initially conducted by GAPI focused on the development and implementation of methodologies for the Strategic Management of Innovation (the prospection and screening of opportunities for innovation, the assessment of the potential of institutions, etc) adapted to the Latin-American scenario. Within this scope, the GAPI has been offering Training Programmes for professionals involved in the formulation, execution and assessment of policies in connection with research and higher education. In accordance with the experience acquired in training public officials and advising government teams, and in the management and development of methodological instruments related to Public Authorities, Political Science, Solidarity Economy, Analysis of Systems, Creation of Scenarios, Situational Strategic Planning, etc, GAPI has been working in the field of Government Sciences and Techniques. This accrued experience and in-depth study of analytical-conceptual and methodological issues has always been related to the group´s founding concern with Science, Technology and Society relations. And it has also been related to the commitment to the training of researchers and undergraduate and post-graduate students capable of critically understanding the nature of these relations and changing them in a sense consistent with improving the public policies involved with them.
